Computer and Video Games fait se fait l'echo d'une rumeur à propos du développement de Quake4. D'après leur contact, Quake4 serait déjà en développement depuis six mois mais pas chez ID Software. L'article de Computer and Video Games se la joue à la Santa Barbara avec des ragots sur les affaires de coeur entre John Carmack et Paul Steed:

Following the conclusion of development on Quake 3 Arena in late 1999, id faced in-fighting over the company’s next high profile project which ultimately saw the unceremonious sacking of 3D modeller Paul Steed in June 2000 and some furious anti-management comments in support from John Carmack. Carmack finally threatened to take his barely disguised genius elsewhere unless namesake Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud, who jointly control 50 percent of the company’s stock, immediately green-lighted the development of DOOM III. Cloud and Carmack relented, but Steed’s whacking left a rather dirty taint on the project at the time. The almost inevitable Quake 4, and any talk of it, vanished.
